AN event to celebrate 80 years since D-Day will be held in Burnham-on-Sea this June.

The D-Day 80 event, organised by Burnham-on-Sea and Highbridge Town Council, will see a beacon lit on the seafront on Thursday, June 6.

The beacon will be lit at 9:15pm, but the Burnham & Highbridge Band will be in attendance and performing live music from around an hour before at 8:10pm.

On Thursday, June 6, at 2:30pm, local seniors are invited to the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre to remember the day of the Normandy landings, which took place 80 years ago to the day, in 1944.

The commemoration - which is separate to the evening event organised by the town council - dubbed 80 YEARS ON, will feature a performance from the Princess Community Choir, who will be singing war time songs, as well as tea and cake provided by the new Cabaret Café Bar.

A spokesperson for the Princess Theatre and Arts Centre said: "As we know, many in our community will want to celebrate this momentous event in British history which is why we will be opening this event up to everyone at a standard ticket price of £7.50 but with subsidised ticket price for those over 65 years of age at just £4.00 per ticket."
